At Newlands in Cape Town, the third Test between South Africa and Australia has built towards a decisive conclusion. The Proteas declared their second innings at 387, leaving the Aussies needing 288 runs to secure victory on day five. With the series locked at 1-1, the outcome of this match will determine the winner of the three-Test contest.

Ryan Rickelton played a central role in South Africa's batting effort, scoring an unbeaten 101 in a crucial partnership with Wiaan Mulder, who contributed 115. The 30-year-old batter reached his third Test century in his 18th appearance for South Africa, helping the Proteas build a commanding position heading into the final day.

Rickelton reflected on the unique circumstances facing both teams as the match approached its climax. He acknowledged the unpredictability of the contest and the multiple paths to victory or defeat that remained available.

"It's win or lose, I guess. No draw tomorrow. If you had to say that it's going down to the third Test, day five, with all three results on the cards or two results on the cards, yeah, I wouldn't have believed it. It's been a special series," Rickelton was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

What Rickelton said about pitch conditions and day five?

The South African batter analysed how the pitch conditions at Newlands would influence the final day's play. Throughout the match, the surface had played slowly, and Rickelton believed this characteristic would remain a defining factor in determining the outcome.

"It definitely felt like it was quite slow. And the ball obviously was soft as well, so to beat the infield was quite hard. There might be three results tomorrow. I just think with that new ball, there are obviously runs available, and there are obviously wickets too," Rickelton said.

Australia's pursuit of the target would require sustained batting discipline on a deteriorating surface. Rickelton assessed the challenge facing the visitors and suggested that maintaining a consistent run rate throughout the day would prove difficult given the pitch's characteristics.

"It has been quite slow. If Australia obviously fancy having a go at it, it might just factor into it. For them to bat at effectively threes [run rate] the whole day will be a big ask, especially on a slower, lower deteriorating wicket," he explained.

Should Australia successfully chase down the 288-run target on day five, they would record the second-highest successful run chase at Newlands. The highest such chase at the venue came in 2002, when Australia pursued 334 with six wickets remaining.
