Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju on Saturday, October 31, said that the implementation of the Green Tankers initiative in the core urban region of Hyderabad would start from November 1 which would supply treater water. The development is important given that the urban area and its surrounding areas are in for a tough summer next year on account of less rainfall due to El Nino.

The Telangana Chief Secretary also said that efforts are being undertaken to reduce water consumption by 20 per cent across individuals, institutions and industries through awareness and conservation measures under the government’s Save Water Campaign.

During a review of the drinking water supply situation in the core urban region at the Secretariat, he emphasised the need for a coordinated water security measures to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply while conserving available freshwater and groundwater resources.

The meeting comes at a time when Hyderabad is staring at an acute drinking water crisis that is impending unless extreme measures are not taken to conserve it.

Jaju also stated that all necessary measures should be put in place to optimise water usage and ensure the sustainable management of available resources. He directed all government departments to utilise treated water for construction, landscaping, cleaning and other non-drinking purposes.

Similarly, government officials have also been instructed to regularly verify the quality of treated water supplied by Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to ensure compliance with prescribed standards. The Chief Secretary directed the Managing Director of the HMWSSB to submit a daily report indicating the quantity of treated water transported and supplied, in million gallons per day (MGD).

HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy briefed the Chief Secretary on the contingency plan to ensure drinking water availability. He informed that the additional 40 MGD scheme under Mission Bhagiratha would be completed by December 15.

Further, Jaju was also informed that the Mission Bhagiratha scheme would continue with its bulk water supply to all Urban Local Bodies merged into the municipal corporations until August next year.

The Water Board will also supply treated water through Green Tankers on demand, on the lines of its existing drinking water tanker service. The facility will also be made available through a dedicated mobile application, enabling consumers to access treated water conveniently.
