Telangana enhances retirement age for judges to 62

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Saturday, October 31, issued an ordinance amending the Telangana Public Employment (Regulation of Age of Superannuation) Act, 1984, and raised the retirement age for state judicial officers from 61 to 62 years, effective retrospectively from March 31, 2026.

The move was prompted by Supreme Court directives and High Court recommendations to retain experienced legal minds. It allows judicial officers who retired this March to rejoin service with full continuity, pay, and seniority, subject to certain conditions.

The benefit of enhancement of the age of superannuation will extend to members of the Telangana State Higher Judicial Service and the Telangana State Judicial Service who superannuated on or after March 31, 2026, but before the date of publication of the ordinance in the Telangana Gazette.

The officers will be given an option to rejoin the judicial office if they have not obtained subsequent employment or been appointed to any other office of profit under the Union Government or any state government.

An officer who rejoins judicial office will have to surrender post-retirement benefits, if any, already received.
