Hyderabad: Commemorating its 37th Foundation Day, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) flagged off the Green Water Tanker Programme at the Secretariat on Sunday, November 1.

Under the initiative, water treated through sewage treatment plants (STPs) will be supplied via green water tankers for construction work, landscaping, gardening, park maintenance, greenery development and other non-potable needs. Government departments, parks and greenery needs will be given priority.

Water Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy said the reuse of treated water is being widely promoted in the wake of the El Niño conditions to reduce the pressure on drinking water resources.

28 Green Water Tankers in the first phase

In the first phase, arrangements have been made to start services through 28 green water tankers from 17 STPs in the city and will later be extended to all divisions across the city.

Around 100 tankers registered for treated water supply

So far, about 100 private tankers, including Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and private operators, have registered with the Water Board to participate in the programme.

To ensure transparency in tanker operations, a dedicated booking system, GPS tracking and electronic Point of Sale (e-POS) systems will be implemented.

Special officers appointed for supervision

Special officers have been appointed for each STP to oversee the operation of Green Water Tankers. They will monitor filling-point operations, tanker allocation, water quality and supply activities.

The Managing Director has directed that every tanker must be painted green and carry special branding in accordance with the design prescribed by the Water Board.

He also instructed that the warning “STP TREATED WATER – NOT FOR DRINKING” must be prominently displayed on every tanker.

On this occasion, the MD recalled that the Water Board had been established to meet the needs of Hyderabad within an area of 167 square kilometres. Its service has now expanded to 2,053 square kilometres.
