Hyderabad: Cases of parents being neglected and abandoned by children are on the rise in Telangana. Since 2021, the state police have received 8,514 complaints from parents seeking protection from eviction and financial abandonment.

The complaints were filed under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act. The number of complaints is considerable, given that Telangana has a law that allows a 15 per cent salary deduction from professionals who neglect their parents.

As many as 8,594 cases were filed before revenue divisional officers (RDOs) across the state between 2021 and Aug 2026 under the Act.

Importantly, nearly 3,100 cases were between April 2025 and August 2026 alone, indicating a sharp rise in complaints by parents and senior citizens seeking maintenance, protection of property rights and support from their children.

The highest number of cases were reported from Hyderabad and its surrounding urban districts, highlighting the shifting family dynamics.

According to a report by The Times of India, government data shows that Hyderabad recorded 1,078 cases, followed by Medchal-Malkajgiri with 989 cases and Rangareddy with 912 cases during the five years.

The three districts account for 35 per cent of the total complaints filed across Telangana. Districts including Karimnagar, Nalgonda and Hanumakonda also recorded 500 and 600 cases each. The Telangana police said annual registrations largely hovered between 1,100 and 1,300 cases until 202. However, they have risen significantly over the past year.

The police attributed the rise in the number of complaints partly to the awareness programmes conducted by the government. to the enactment of the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Act, 2026, which aimed at strengthening financial security for elderly parents.

The new law, passed by the assembly in March 2026, supplements the provisions of the MWPSC Act, 2007.

As per the law, it is mandatory for public representatives and employees in the government and private sectors to support their elderly parents.
