Money Plant Turning Yellow or Rotting in Water? 3 Simple Care Tips From a Delhi Gardener

A money plant is one of the easiest houseplants to grow. It can grow in a glass jar of water, adding a touch of green to a windowsill, desk, or living room. However, yellowing leaves, rotting stems, and slow growth can leave many plant lovers wondering what they are doing wrong.
Dipalee Katre, a plant styling enthusiast from New Delhi, shares simple gardening advice on her Instagram page, ‘Wabi Sabi with Dipalee’, where she offers tips on growing plants and creating peaceful green spaces at home.

In one of her videos, she shares three easy tips to help money plants grow better in water.
1. Cut the stem just below a node
When taking a cutting from a money plant, pay attention to the node. This is the point on the stem where leaves and roots can appear. She recommends cutting just below a node when preparing a cutting for propagation.
Choosing a healthy stem with at least one node gives the cutting a better chance of developing roots and growing into a new plant.
2. Change the water every week
Water that sits in a container for too long can accumulate debris and become unsuitable for healthy root growth. Dipalee advises changing the water at least once a week.
Fresh water helps keep the roots clean and reduces the build-up of stagnant water. While changing it, check the roots and stems for any signs of rotting. A clean container also helps maintain a healthier growing environment.
3. Add clean stones or pebbles
The third tip is to add clean stones or pebbles to the container. These provide support to the cutting, helping it remain upright instead of shifting around in the water.
Make sure the stones are clean before adding them. Avoid packing the container too tightly, as the roots need room to grow.
With the right cutting, regular water changes, and a little support from pebbles, growing a money plant in water can be an easier way to bring greenery into your home.
As Dipalee suggests, try these tips with your own plant and observe how it responds. After all, a few small changes to your gardening routine can make caring for your indoor plants much easier.
