MP: Truck driver accused of killing SHO injured while trying to escape police custody

Indore, Nov 3 (PTI): The truck driver, the main accused in the alleged murder of station house officer Dilip Puri, who had gone to stop interstate smuggling of illicit liquor in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district, was injured while trying to escape police custody on Tuesday night, an official said.
Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra said the truck driver, Gajendra alias Akku Rawat, who had been absconding since the incident, was detained in Alirajpur district.
Without revealing much about Rawat's alleged bid to escape custody, he said that while being brought to Dewas, the accused made an attempt to flee and was injured during "standard operating procedure" action by the police.
Mishra said that the injured accused was taken to the Dewas district hospital, where he is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
According to an official account, Khategaon police station in-charge Puri, along with a police team, arrived on the Indore-Betul highway early Monday morning after receiving information about a consignment of illicit liquor being smuggled into Gujarat.
Puri stopped a truck carrying over 1,800 litres of liquor and attempted to question the driver, but the driver, in an attempt to escape the police, drove the truck onto a road divider. During the incident, the rear wheel of the vehicle ran over the station in-charge, killing him. PTI HWP MAS AMJ
