India captain Shubman Gill is getting set for the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on November 4. The venue presents a distinctive challenge for the visiting side, with its unusual ground dimensions requiring careful thought about field placement and tactical positioning.

Gill expressed his perspective on the conditions and the ground layout during his pre-match preparation. He acknowledged that playing in New Zealand will bring multiple variables into play, from the new ball regulations in ODI cricket to the timing of matches and the conditions that emerge under lights.

Speaking ahead of the match, Gill highlighted the specific challenge posed by Eden Park's layout. He noted that his team has limited experience at the venue, which adds to the difficulty of identifying the areas where batters are likely to score runs.

"The dimensions are a bit weird, and I think it will be a challenge for us to be able to find the right placement for the fielders. Hopefully, you know, we can find those pockets sooner rather than later," Gill was quoted as saying by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Eden Park's shortest boundaries measure less than 60 metres from the centre of the pitch, making it a relatively compact ground compared to many other international venues. However, the square boundaries are on the bigger side. This configuration demands precise field settings to restrict scoring opportunities in those shorter areas.

The India captain carries experience from playing at the venue previously and expressed enthusiasm about returning to the country. Gill made his international debut in New Zealand and has built familiarity with conditions across the nation. This year, he has been the leading run-getter in ODI cricket, scoring 895 runs in 11 innings at an average of 111.87 and a strike rate of 118.7, demonstrating exceptional form heading into the series.

Gill acknowledged the complexity of playing in New Zealand, where multiple factors influence match outcomes. He explained that the use of two new balls in ODI cricket, combined with matches beginning at 3 PM local time, means the second innings will be played under lights when conditions become less predictable.

"There is a lot of difference in the conditions. There are two new balls in the ODIs. This is also my first time in New Zealand. Also, we are playing fairly late as the game begins from 3 PM local time," Gill said.

"So when the second innings begin, the conditions will be fairly uncertain. When you are playing two new balls, especially under the lights, there might be more swing or bounce. It will be exciting to see how the wickets play. The weather will also play a role and we will be playing accordingly," he added.

How does Gill view the overall conditions in New Zealand?

Gill acknowledged the fantastic reception his team has got since arriving in New Zealand and expressed his eagerness to build positive memories during the tour.

"The reception has been great. Playing here at Eden Park is always very exciting. I have played one match here, so not a lot of experience, but a bit of it," he said.
