ACB nabs Adilabad SI for demanding, accepting Rs 40,000 bribe

Hyderabad: A sub-inspector attached to Bazarhathnoor police station in the Adilabad district was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday, November 4, for allegedly demanding Rs 40,000 from a complainant to avoid implicating him in a case relating to the death of an unmarried woman.
The accused officer, G. Ramesh, had initially demanded Rs 50,000 and later reduced the amount to Rs 40,000 on the complainant’s request.
He allegedly threatened to implicate the complainant in a case registered under Section 194 (death under suspicious circumstances) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), as the deceased woman had reportedly made her last phone call to him before her death.
The SI had also retained the complainant’s mobile phone and allegedly demanded the bribe to return it and extend official favour by not implicating him in the case.
During the trap operation on Wednesday, Ramesh instructed the complainant to place the money beneath centring boxes near an under-construction petrol bunk on the outskirts of a village. The complainant followed the instructions, after which the ACB caught the officer.
The accused officer has been arrested and will be produced before the Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases in Karimnagar for judicial remand. The case is under investigation.
