Kamareddy medical college suspends 14 MBBS students over ragging

Hyderabad: Fourteen second-year MBBS students at Government Medical College (GMC) in Kamareddy have been barred from attending classes after allegations of ragging first-year students.

The action was taken after freshers submitted a complaint to the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Four students have been suspended for six months, while 10 others will remain suspended for four months.

The college’s anti-ragging committee examined the complaint and found that the second-year students had troubled their juniors.

Freshers faced repeated harassment in hostel

A report in The Times of India quoted the college principal Dr B Valya saying that the first-year and final-year students were staying in the same hostel, whereas second-year students were living outside the college accommodation.

Despite this arrangement, the second-year students allegedly entered the hostel occupied by freshers. They reportedly made the juniors introduce themselves repeatedly.

College staff had noticed some of the students entering the premises and warned them against the practice. However, the alleged misconduct continued for another three to four days.

The principal also clarified that the final-year students, who shared the hostel premises with the freshers, were not connected to the incident.

Complaint reaches medical education authorities

The alleged ragging took place in October. The affected students subsequently approached the NMC with a complaint.

The commission sent the complaint to Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS). Subsequently, the varsity brought the matter to the college’s attention.

The medical college is preparing a report detailing the disciplinary measures taken against the students for submission to the NMC.

Ragging is prohibited under anti-ragging rules and can attract legal action. Medical institutions are expected to investigate complaints referred by the NMC, take appropriate steps and inform the commission about the action taken.
