India's T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav is set to return as Mumbai's captain in white-ball cricket, with the Mumbai senior selection committee deciding to hand him the leadership responsibilities for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, according to a report by The Times of India.

Mumbai will begin their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign in Kolkata on November 14, with Hyderabad as their first opponents in Elite Group D. The group also includes Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Vidarbha.

A source close to the Mumbai Cricket Association's selection panel confirmed the decision.

"Mumbai's senior selection committee (led by Rajesh Pawar) has decided that Surya will lead Mumbai in this season's white-ball tournaments. Mumbai will play SMAT on Nov 7 and Nov 9. The Mumbai squad will be picked on Nov 9. The team will leave for Kolkata on Nov 11," a source was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Why was Suryakumar Yadav left out of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad?

Despite making himself available for red-ball cricket, Suryakumar was not included in Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad for the current season. The selectors cited a lack of sufficient recent red-ball cricket as the primary reason for his exclusion at the time of squad selection.

His four-day preparation had been limited to appearances for MIG Cricket Club in the MCA President's Cup. The selection panel judged that those outings did not meet the threshold required for Ranji Trophy consideration, leaving his red-ball future with Mumbai unresolved for now. The decision underlines the committee's view that white-ball cricket remains Suryakumar's primary domain at the domestic level this season.

What is Suryakumar Yadav's recent leadership record with India?

Suryakumar's appointment as Mumbai's white-ball captain is firmly grounded in an outstanding record of international leadership. Born on September 14, 1990, the right-hander guided India to the T20 World Cup title in 2026, cementing his reputation as one of the most effective white-ball captains the country has produced in recent years.

Before that triumph, Suryakumar had already led India to the 2025 Asia Cup as T20I captain, making him a back-to-back winner of major tournaments in the shortest format. That sustained success at the highest level gives the Mumbai Cricket Association strong grounds for entrusting him with the white-ball reins at the domestic level for 2026-27, as Surya looks to translate his international credentials into a productive campaign for Mumbai across both white-ball competitions.
