Medak: Collector Pratima Singh called upon the farmers to cultivate alternative crops by avoiding the traditional water intensitive paddy crop during the yasangi. In a press statement on Thursday, the Collector said there was little water resources available as the district received deficit rains during the year due to El Nino.

Considering this, Singh asked the farmers to cultivate the crops that would need minimum water. Even though the ground water is available at some places now, she said that the ground water table would further deplete during the next couple of months when the crops would dry up.

The Collector directed the agriculture, irrigation, revenue and other department officials to hold village level educative meetings to sensitise the farmers on the need for going for alternative crops.
