Telangana foreign medical graduates intensify stir over stipends

Hyderabad: Foreign medical graduates (FMG) in Telangana intensified their protest on Friday, November 6, against the disparity in stipends given to interns.

The protest, along with a relay hunger strike, was organised at the Telangana State Medical Council office at Koti in Hyderabad. On Friday, the strike launched by the FMGs also completed a month.

The primary demand of the interns is parity in stipend payment of Rs 29,792 to match the stipends of the medical students who completed MBBS in Telangana and around India. The protesting interns demanded immediate clearance of all stipend arrears accrued since January 2026 and a guarantee that they will be shielded from punitive actions or arbitrary internship extensions.

The FMG interns argue that they have been entrusted with the same number of responsibilities as MBBS graduates, and yet they are receiving a stipend of Rs 5,000 only.

Videos shared on social media showed several students being detained by the police. The protestors raised “Revanth Reddy Murdabaad” slogans. Some of them also asked the government, “Who will work for Rs 5,000?”

One of the protestors addressed the media and said, “We are only demanding parity in pay. It has been nine months since we joined duties and not a single penny has been credited to us. It is shameful if we ask our parents for money for fuel.”

On October 22, the Foreign Medical Graduates protested in front of the Director of Medical Education’s Office in Koti, demanding stipends equal to those paid to Indian medical graduates (IMG). Several protesters were detained and shifted to Chikkadpally Police Station.
