Mohammed Shami announced his Test retirement on November 6, 2026, the anniversary of his debut in the format. The 36-year-old fast bowler shared his decision through an Instagram post, noting the symbolic significance of stepping away on the same date he had begun his international journey thirteen years earlier.

Morne Morkel, India's bowling coach, reflected on Shami's departure with genuine warmth and appreciation for his contribution to the team and the dressing room environment. Speaking about the retirement, Morkel acknowledged the significant role Shami played in his own transition into the Indian setup when he first joined the coaching staff.

"I was quite fortunate when I first started with the group for Shami to be a part of the team. You know, a highly skilful player, a quality guy to have around in the group. And I was quite lucky when I joined, for him to bring sort of the Indian language into the dressing room." Morkel said ahead of the second ODI between India and New Zealand.

"He helped me quite a lot. So a sad day to see him go. But yeah, I mean, he's still bowling a lot of overs back home, and it's still great to see," he added.

What made Shami's career particularly remarkable was his effectiveness in overseas conditions. Across 41 Tests away from home, he claimed 145 wickets at an average of 30.33, demonstrating his ability to perform consistently in challenging environments across multiple continents and against varied opposition.

Shami's overall Test record spans 64 matches in which he took 229 wickets, establishing himself as one of India's most accomplished fast bowlers in the format's history.

The Bengal pacer's Test journey began on November 6, 2013, when he made his debut against the West Indies in what would become a thirteen-year career at the highest level. Throughout his tenure, Shami became a cornerstone of India's bowling attack across numerous series and tournaments, earning recognition as a renowned performer in international cricket.
