A court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, acquitted Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in a 2018 criminal defamation case over his alleged remarks against then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah.

The case relates to remarks allegedly made by Gandhi against Shah in 2018. Further details of the court’s order are awaited.

The court ruled that Gandhi’s remarks were not defamatory in nature. The complaint was filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra in August 2018 over Gandhi’s comments during the Karnataka Assembly election campaign, in which he referred to Shah as an accused in a murder case. Shah had been discharged in the Sohrabuddin encounter case by a special CBI court in 2014.
