Rahul Gandhi’s convoy vehicles collide in UP; SIT to probe

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was unharmed on Monday, October 26, after several vehicles in his convoy collided on the Purvanchal Expressway while he was travelling to Sultanpur for a court hearing in a defamation case against him.
According to Press Trust of India (PTI), a police officer said the incident was not serious and no major injuries were reported. The convoy soon resumed its journey towards Sultanpur.
The pile-up occurred around 10.15 am, the officer said. A private vehicle at the front of the convoy, belonging to local Congress leaders, braked suddenly for an unspecified reason, causing the vehicles behind it to ram into one another. Police said the vehicles involved had joined the convoy midway and were carrying passengers, including Congress workers from neighbouring Amethi district.
Later on Monday, Uttar Pradesh Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the accident, on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna, officials said.
The SIT will examine the circumstances and causes of the collision and determine whether there was any negligence or lapse in security, escort arrangements or traffic management, according to a police statement. It has been directed to carry out a comprehensive investigation and submit a detailed report to police headquarters at the earliest.
The team has also been tasked with suggesting measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Gandhi’s convoy, accompanied by police personnel for security, was expected to reach the Sultanpur court around 11.15 am. The case relates to alleged objectionable remarks he made against then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah at a rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
