Within a day of 17 inmates escaping the Theni District Jail, the Tamil Nadu police managed to nab 13 of them with the use of drone technology by Tuesday evening, October 27.

South Zone IG Vijayendra Bidari confirmed the development to ANI.

The 17 prisoners were in the same cell at the Thekampatti sub-jail. Around 10.30 pm, they called out to the prison guards for help, as they claimed one of the inmates had an epileptic seizure.

When the prison guard entered the cell, the inmates allegedly attacked him and fled the premises. Police personnel Thangapandi, who is attached to the jail, sustained a head injury and was admitted to the Government Hospital at G Vilakku, according to ANI.

Two other prison personnel were also injured, said reports.

Special teams formed, most prisoners caught

The police formed 17 special teams to trace and apprehend the prisoners. Officers also conducted intensive vehicle checks and monitored routes. However, it was drone technology that came in handy, as the police could actually watch the prisoners walk together and contain them in an area before arresting 13 of them.

Checkposts were also established at 16 locations in the neighbouring Dindigul district.

The Kandamanur police have registered a case, and further investigation is underway.
