'Pretty disrespectful' - Stuart Broad slams Lancashire over their treatment of James Anderson

After 25 years of service to Lancashire, James Anderson has been released by the county following his retirement from Test cricket in 2024. The former England fast bowler finished his international career with 704 wickets, the most by any fast bowler in the five-day format. Lancashire announced the decision to not renew Anderson's contract, leaving the veteran cricketer disappointed that the choice had been taken out of his hands.

Stuart Broad has strongly criticised the manner in which Lancashire communicated this decision to Anderson. On October 19, Anderson met with the club's new leadership to receive the news that he would not be offered a fresh contract. Broad expressed serious concerns about how the situation was handled by the county.

Broad outlined his objections to the timing and process of Lancashire's decision-making. The club's new management had informed Anderson of the non-renewal without advance notice or opportunity for a dignified farewell to supporters. Broad felt the county's leadership should have planned the announcement more carefully, particularly given the circumstances of Anderson's recent departure from international cricket.

"It is a pretty disrespectful way for Lancashire to deliver that news to him. He met with the new chief executive and the new director of cricket, Paul Farbrace, and they said they would not be offering him a new contract. That is October 19. I get that they are new in the role, so they could not have done that in August and said, 'sign off, give the fans your goodbye, have your last bowl at Old Trafford', all that sort of stuff. But there must be some leadership within that club that could have planned that," Broad said on the For the Love of Cricket podcast.

Why did Broad criticise Lancashire's approach?

During the County Championship season, Anderson demonstrated his continued value to Lancashire by taking 50 wickets at an average of 17, earning recognition as the club's player of the year. Despite these strong individual performances, Lancashire finished second bottom of the Division Two table and has endured a difficult period in recent seasons. Broad acknowledged the financial constraints facing the county but questioned whether Anderson's proven domestic form should have warranted different treatment.

"I get that the thought process is probably they can get two half-decent cricketers for the one with losing that salary. They have finished second bottom of the Championship, had a woeful season, they have been poor for a few years, and they need to improve. But Jimmy got 50 wickets at 17 - there are not many bowlers in the country that did that, so it does not surprise me that there have already been some counties on the phone to see what his interest levels are," Broad said.

Anderson has since moved forward with ventures beyond his Lancashire tenure. He became co-owner of a Naples-based franchise competing in the inaugural Italia T10 League, which launched the following month. The move marked a significant transition in his post-Test career direction.
