Srinagar- Senior Advocate Tabasum Zafar has become the first Kashmiri woman lawyer to be recommended for appointment as a judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, with the Supreme Court Collegium approving her name along with those of eight other advocates.

The decision was taken at a Collegium meeting held on October 29, according to a statement issued by the Supreme Court Collegium.

The nine advocates recommended for appointment are Vishal Sharma, Vikram Kumar Sharma, Namgyal Wangchuk, Pawan Kumar Kundal, Tahir Majid Shamsi, Tabasum Zafar, Amit Gupta, Pranav Kohli and Anupam Raina.

Zafar’s recommendation marks a significant milestone for women’s representation in the higher judiciary in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Supreme Court Collegium’s decision follows an earlier exercise by the High Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice Arun Palli, which had recommended 11 names for appointment as High Court judges in April this year.

The earlier recommendations comprised 10 advocates under the Bar quota and one judicial officer under the Bench quota.

The appointments are part of efforts to address vacancies in the High Court, whose sanctioned strength was increased from 17 to 25 judges in November 2024.

The recommendations will now be processed by the competent authorities in accordance with the established procedure for judicial appointments.
