Tanker hit by explosive devices in Strait of Hormuz, crew safe

A tanker caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after two explosive devices attached to its hull detonated, temporarily disabling the vessel, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said.
The incident occurred 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, while the tanker was travelling outbound through the strategic waterway on Thursday, October 29.
In an initial advisory posted on X on Friday, October 30, UKMTO said, “A third-party has reported that a tanker transiting outbound is on fire, the cause is unknown at time of report.”
The agency later issued a verified update confirming that all crew members were safe and there was no environmental impact.
According to UKMTO, a small boat approached the tanker on its port side and attached two explosive devices to the hull above the waterline. Their detonation triggered a fire in the engine room, temporarily disabling the vessel.
“The fire is now reported as extinguished and vessel is continuing to its next port of call,” the agency said.

UKMTO advised vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity as authorities investigate.
The incident comes amid tensions between Iran and the United States over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global energy and commodity supplies.
In February, the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks on Israel and US targets across the region. A ceasefire was reached in April.
In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding concerning freedom of navigation through the strait. However, its implementation stalled amid disagreements over security arrangements.
