Karnataka students to experience village life with new programme

Bengaluru: In an effort to connect urban children with the agricultural roots of Karnataka, the state government has launched ‘Gram Anubhava’, an educational programme that will provide school students with first-hand experience of village life.
The initiative was launched in Bengaluru on Kannada Rajyotsava Day in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister and ministers. It seeks to familiarise students with farming, animal husbandry, dairy activities and rural culture through practical exposure.
Under the programme, children from urban schools will visit villages and spend a day observing the activities of rural communities. They will learn how crops are cultivated, how dairy farming is managed and how livestock contributes to the rural economy.
The programme is intended to make students understand the importance of farmers and the hard work involved in agricultural production. It will also introduce them to village traditions, rural occupations and the challenges faced by farming families.
The government has taken up the initiative with the objective of making education more experiential. Rather than depending entirely on textbook knowledge, students will be encouraged to learn by observing and interacting with people engaged in agriculture.
Initially, children from more than 10 schools have been included. The programme will be expanded gradually to cover urban schools across all districts of Karnataka.
The government hopes that the initiative will narrow the gap between city and village life and instil respect for farmers, agricultural workers and rural traditions among the younger generation.
The programme is particularly significant at a time when rapid urbanisation has reduced opportunities for city children to experience farming and understand the rural economy.
Parents and education enthusiasts have welcomed the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to provide students with meaningful practical knowledge and a better understanding of the communities that sustain the state’s agricultural economy.
