Hyderabad: Hemanth, the accused in the chainsaw attack on two students at the Rathpadu Zilla Parishad High School in Andhra Pradesh, underwent surgery on Monday, November 2, during which a bullet was removed from his body.

On Sunday, November 1, the AP police shot at and apprehended Hemanth after he allegedly tried to assault the personnel.

According to local reports, police got a tip-off that 21-year-old Hemanth was hiding in a forest area in Atmakur. When a police team approached him, he allegedly tried to flee.

Bullets were fired in an attempt to stop him, leaving Hemanth injured. Reports said the accused had injured the Raptadu Circle Inspector during the incident, though this could not be independently confirmed immediately. He was shifted to the District Government General Hospital in Anantapur for treatment.

Background of the incident

Two female students were injured in the attack at Raptadu Zilla Parishad High School on Saturday, October 31.

Hemanth barged into the girls’ classroom with a chainsaw after one of the victims allegedly rejected his proposal. He is reportedly related to the victim.

She was shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru for advanced treatment. Andhra Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav told the media that the girl suffered multiple grievous injuries, including the complete severing of her right hand, injuries to her neck and face, several fractures to her skull and ribs, and damage to blood vessels.

Minister Nara Lokesh later visited the girl in Bengaluru and said the next 48 hours are critical, as there is a higher risk of infection.

The second girl sustained injuries to her legs while attempting to save her classmate.
