Passenger vehicle wholesales went over five lakh units for the first time in October 2026 as Tata edged Mahindra and Kia re-entered the top five

The PV wholesales got past the five lakh milestone for the first time in October as it set a new monthly record for the industry. Market volume is estimated to be around 5.30 lakh units as festive purchases lifted showroom activity across many manufacturers. The month also produced a close fight for second place and a change inside the top five.

Tata Motors moved ahead of Mahindra by only 556 units as it sold 73,894 vehicles in the domestic market against 61,134 units a year earlier as its volumes rose 20.9 per cent. Mahindra posted 73,338 units compared to 71,624 units in October 2025 as it recorded a 2.4 per cent increase. The tiny gap between the two manufacturers became one of the main talking points from the record month.

Maruti Suzuki remained in a completely different volume bracket at the top after selling 2,16,789 vehicles compared to 1,80,675 units in October 2025. Its sales rose 20 per cent year-on-year. The company also carried close to 2.45 lakh pending bookings and dealer inventory had dropped to 12 days after the festive rush. Hyundai took fourth position at 62,799 units with a notable distance to Kia in fifth.

The Venue contributed a record 13,017 units – its best monthly tally so far in India. Kia, meanwhile, climbed into fifth place after recording 33,462 units. The move pushed Toyota to sixth and reshuffled the order.

Lower down the market, JSW MG Motor India recorded 8,013 units as its sales rose 19 per cent year-on-year thanks to Windsor EV. Meanwhile, Honda Cars India posted 7,609 units and the new Elevate was among the products supporting its decent October figures. The festive period also helped dealers reduce stock quickly at the upper end of the market where booking conversions accelerated across popular models. The next three months will prove to be significant for car brands as closing out the year on a high is key by leveraging the festivities and positive mindset amongst consumers.
