Israeli forces withdrew from the entire city of Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank at 6 am on Monday, November 2, ending a 10-day military offensive that displaced thousands of Palestinians and caused extensive destruction.

According to the Hebron Municipality, 4,969 Palestinians were displaced during the operation, while at least 15 homes and other structures were demolished. Israeli forces also occupied several residential properties, turning them into military posts and barracks.
The offensive damaged roads, vehicles and public infrastructure, while commercial activity and education were disrupted. Schools and universities have since begun reopening.

Hebron Governor Khaled Dudin announced that Palestinian security forces had assumed control of the area following the withdrawal. Authorities were monitoring the situation and working to facilitate the safe return of displaced families.
Local authorities urged residents to watch out for unexploded ammunition, suspicious objects and military remnants that could endanger those returning to affected areas.
What triggered the Israeli offensive?
The Israeli army launched the operation on October 23 after two Palestinians carried out a shooting attack that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others. Israeli forces subsequently killed the two attackers and demolished their homes.
Following the incident, the military imposed closures across Hebron and several surrounding villages, restricting movement and seizing Palestinian properties for military use.
Settler attacks across the West Bank
The offensive took place amid a wider escalation in Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians across the occupied West Bank since the outbreak of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023.
Such attacks have also intensified in the lead-up to the Israeli legislative elections held on October 27, adding to insecurity across the occupied territory.
