Makkah: Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu entered the Holy Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in Makkah on Monday, November 2, during his Umrah visit to Saudi Arabia, describing it as a rare and historic spiritual honour.

Tinubu becomes the second Nigerian President to enter the Kaaba, after former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was granted access in February 2016 during an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

A video circulating on social media platforms shows Tinubu entering the Holy Kaaba before kissing the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. The footage also captures members of his delegation accompanying him inside the sacred structure.

He thanked King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for granting him and his delegation the rare privilege.

In a statement issued by the Nigerian Presidency, Tinubu described the experience as a deeply cherished spiritual moment.

“I want to say a big thank you for the faith, for the recognition. I can’t believe the fencing of the Kaaba is in green, white, green, which reminds us of the Nigerian identity,” he said, referring to the colours of Nigeria’s national flag.

He also expressed gratitude to the Saudi leadership for the hospitality extended to his delegation.

“It is an honour that I enjoyed, and it is gracious of them to have allowed me to enter inside the Kaaba. This is history,” he said.

Tinubu seeks wisdom and resilience

Speaking about his prayers inside the Kaaba, Tinubu said he had asked Allah for wisdom and resilience to continue serving the Nigerian people.

He recalled performing Umrah before the 2023 presidential election, when he prayed for Allah’s blessings and promised to return to express his gratitude.

The President also cited Surah Aal-Imran, verse 26 of the Holy Quran, which states that Allah grants sovereignty to whom He wills and takes it away from whom He wills.

Referring to the verse, he said power and authority ultimately belonged to Allah and should be exercised responsibly.

Tinubu described his election as President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria as a divine favour, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead the country.

Tinubu said the spiritual experience had strengthened his determination to develop Nigeria and deliver prosperity in line with the aspirations of its people.

“My commitment to Project Nigeria is higher. I am determined to usher in prosperity and fully develop the country, consistent with the wish of Allah and the support of the people,” he said.

He urged leaders to follow their conscience and pursue policies that would secure a better future for the country.

“I asked for wisdom and resilience to continue to serve the people, God has all the power, he told us to use our power well cos if we don’t, he can’t take it from us and give it to another person. He has done me a great favour to be president out of 200 million people”.

Tinubu’s second Umrah as Nigerian President

The Saudi visit marked Tinubu’s second Umrah since assuming office on May 29, 2023. He first performed the pilgrimage in November 2023, following the Saudi-Africa Summit in Riyadh.

Tinubu departed Abuja on October 29 and arrived in Saudi Arabia later that day. He performed Umrah at the Grand Mosque on October 30 before entering the Kaaba on Monday.
