The issue originated with the arrest of Giri’s driver, Gurjant Singh alias Janta, who was caught with 7.5 grams of heroin. During police interrogation, Gurjant named the leader, setting the staged action into motion.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, October 31, when ASI Sukhdev, in civilian clothes, entered the Shiv Sena leader’s residence around Khatikan Chowk. The officer was unaware that a hidden camera was installed and went to place the packet underneath the mattress.
Soon, a police team, led by Sadar Station House Officer (SHO) Vijaypal Singh and City-2 SHO Tarwinder Kumar Bedi, raided Giri’s residence. Officers said they uncovered 30 grams of heroin beneath the mattress, leading to the Shiv Sena leader’s immediate arrest.
The plot unravelled on Saturday evening when senior officials reviewed hidden-camera footage that clearly exposed the ASI’s actions. Upon reviewing the video, SSP Darpan Ahluwalia ordered Giri’s immediate discharge from the case.
Following formal confirmation of the footage on Sunday, November 1, SSP Ahluwalia suspended ASI Sukhdev Singh and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an SP-rank officer, to reconstruct the timeline and probe the involvement of other police personnel.
