Foul odour, overflowing toilets: Protesters at Niloufer Hospital

Hyderabad: Several activists on Monday, November 2, held a protest at Niloufer Hospital, calling on health authorities to address corruption and deteriorating infrastructure at the state-run facility.

Progressive Youth League (PYL) and the Progressive Organisation of Women (POW) activists were among those present at the hospital, holding a banner with a list of their demands.

The protesters demanded an increase in hospital beds, free medicines and diagnostic tests, along with better accommodations, clean drinking water, and hygienic sanitation facilities for patients and their attendants. They urged authorities to stop staff from extorting money from patients and called for an annual probe into alleged illegal recruitment scams.

Grieving and exhausted, patient attendants are left stranded outdoors without drinking water or restroom facilities, even as two entire floors of a newly built three-storey shelter remain unused, the activists said.

They said toilets in both the new and old blocks are overflowing and unhygienic, while crowded corridors and foul odours are turning the hospital facility into a breeding ground for infections.

Protesters flagged the recently unveiled scam that alleges systemic corruption within the administration, where syndicates falsify billing records and siphon off public funds.
