Telangana HC questions Jangaon Collector over AI-generated orders

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has taken serious note of the Jangaon district collector allegedly relying on artificial intelligence (AI) to issue orders in revenue matters.

The observation was made by Justice NV Shravan Kumar on Tuesday, November 3, while hearing a petition filed by Madipelly Komuraiah, a resident of Peddamadur village in Devaruppula mandal of Jangaon district.

The petitioner approached the court challenging an order issued by the district collector on September 8 in connection with a land dispute.

Petitioner alleges unfair use of AI

Advocate M Madhava Reddy, who represented Komuraiah, told the court that the collector had issued the order without properly considering the details and evidence. He alleged that AI had been used to prepare a one-sided decision.

The lawyer requested the court to suspend the collector’s order.

After hearing the arguments, the High Court not only stayed the order issued on September 8 but also sent notices to the Principal Secretary of the Revenue Department, the Jangaon district collector, the Devaruppula tahsildar and other officials. In the notices, the court sought their responses.

High Court seeks Advocate General’s explanation

Assistant Government Pleader Haritha, who was appearing for the Revenue Department, informed the court that the issue had already reached the Government Pleader for Revenue.

She said the Government Pleader for Revenue had written to the Advocate General’s office for guidance.

Following it, the Advocate General A Sudarshan Reddy has been asked to inform court about the steps taken.

The court postponed the next hearing to November 18.
