Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) and National Institute of Technology Warangal (NIT-W) have improved their position in the QS Asia University Rankings 2027.

While IIT-H ranks 251st in Asia, NIT-W secured the 624th position.

In the previous edition, IIT Hyderabad was ranked 270th while NIT Warangal had earlier featured in the 771-780 rank band.

Research quality drives IIT Hyderabad’s improvement

IIT Hyderabad said its improved position was mainly due to better research performance and institutional reputation.

A report in The Times of India quoted Saurabh Shandilya, the institute’s QS rankings coordinator, saying that the biggest gains came from an increase in research papers published per faculty member and citations received per paper. Academic and employer reputation also contributed to the improvement.

IIT-H secured the 30th position in Asia for research papers per faculty member. It also ranked 41st for the number of staff members holding PhDs.

In other categories, the institute stood at 209th in employer reputation and 226th in academic reputation.

NIT Warangal improves ranking through research focus

NIT Warangal also recorded a significant rise in the latest QS Asia rankings, moving from the 771-780 band to 624th position.

The report quoted Director Prof Vidyadhar Subudhi attributing the progress to efforts to strengthen the institute’s research environment.

He said the institute had encouraged faculty members to take a more active role in research and development.

The university has also introduced courses and programmes in emerging areas such as quantum technology, artificial intelligence, VLSI and electric mobility.

JNTU Hyderabad enters QS Asia rankings

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad has entered the QS Asia University Rankings for the first time. It secured a place in the 1201-1300 band.

Among Telangana institutions, IIT Hyderabad and the University of Hyderabad (UoH) are the only two universities that retained places within the top 300.

However, UoH moved from 246th last year to 270th in the 2027 rankings.

Meanwhile, Osmania University dropped from 470th to 650th position.

Maulana Azad National Urdu University remained in the 1101-1200 rank band. The English and Foreign Languages University slipped from the 1401-1500 band to the 1501+ category.
