Ophthalmologists urge caution against firecracker eye injuries this Diwali

Hyderabad: With just a few days away from Diwali celebrations, ophthalmologists have urged people to exercise caution while lighting firecrackers.

Firecracker-related eye injuries can range from mild irritation and surface abrasions to severe injuries, including corneal damage, bleeding inside the eye, traumatic cataract, retinal damage, and even permanent vision loss, says Dr Navya Cherukuri, Ophthalmologist, LVPEI’s Kallam Anji Reddy campus, Hyderabad.

Purchase fireworks from authorised manufacturers and ensure crackers are thoroughly dried in the sun for two days. Store the firecrackers in cardboard boxes, out of children’s reach and away from flammable materials like gas cylinders or oil cans. Always supervise children closely while they play with firecrackers.

“A few simple precautions go a long way in ensuring that the celebrations remain safe and joyful for all,” adds Dr Navya Cherukuri.

Do’s and Don’ts during Diwali:

Dos

• If there is any debris in the eye, rinse gently with clean water

• Avoid trying to remove debris at home

• If possible, place a clean, dry cloth or an eye shield over the eye to prevent movement or additional injury

• Keep injured eye closed to avoid further damage

• Get the injured person to an eye care professional or emergency room as quickly as possible

Don’ts

• Avoid putting pressure on the injured eye, as this could worsen the injury

• Touching/rubbing the injured eye exacerbates the injury

• Avoid using ointments, creams, or home remedies on the eye without professional guidance

• Don’t delay seeking medical care, even if the injury seems minor
