11 personnel washed away while rescuing fishermen in Khammam

Hyderabad: Two boats carrying 11 personnel capsized in the overflowing Bethupalli irrigation tank in Khammam on Wednesday, November 4, while on a rescue operation.
The people on the boat included personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire Services and local guides, Deccan Chronicle reported.
The incident unfolded when five fishermen entered the reservoir to fix their nets and prevent their catch from washing away. They got stranded in the fast-rising water, and a three-member fire department unit was deployed for rescue.
The unit also ended up stranded when their boat engine failed.
The 11-member rescue team was deployed and was able to successfully retrieve the initial fire department team. However, when they tried to reach the fishermen, powerful currents overturned both boats and swept away all 11 members, according to the report.
District Collector Diwakar TS is stationed at the site and coordinating emergency operations. NDRF teams have been pressed into service and aerial drones are being utilised to deliver life jackets.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has taken a serious note of the incident and ordered all necessary measures to bring back the personnel. He has asked Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju to continuously monitor the situation.
