Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) completed repairs to major leaks in the 105-year-old conduit carrying raw water from the Osman Sagar reservoir to Hyderabad six hours ahead of schedule, officials said on Wednesday

“Drinking water supply to affected areas was being restored in phases,” the Water Board’s statement said.

“More than 90 percent of leaks at eight critical locations were controlled during a 36-hour shutdown that began at 6 am on Nov 3, significantly reducing water loss. Repairs were undertaken at Sabza Colony, Janaki Nagar, Tolichowki, Manikonda and Gandipet through coordinated efforts,” it added.

The stone conduit had developed major leaks at several points because of damage to its masonry and joints. Full restoration is expected to take several months, but immediate repairs were undertaken to reduce supply losses and prevent wastage amid possible water availability challenges linked to upcoming El Niño conditions.

Pumping and distribution are resuming in areas under Operation and Maintenance Divisions XIII, covering Goshamahal and Karwan; XIV, covering Kapra and Uppal; XV, covering Jubilee Hills and Seri Lingampally; and XVII, covering Kawadiguda and Secunderabad.
