Hyderabad: Telangana has received approval for five additional urban development projects with a combined cost of Rs 3,892 crore. The new projects include a major increase in Hyderabad’s Godavari water supply capacity and measures to reduce flooding in Greater Warangal.

The latest clearances were given by the National Apex Committee (NAC) of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at a meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, November 3. The Centre has approved financial assistance of Rs 873 crore for these five projects.

With the latest decision, eight projects from Telangana have been cleared under the Urban Challenge Fund (UCF). Their combined investment stands at Rs 9,573 crore, of which the Centre’s contribution is Rs 2,293 crore, the Municipal Administration Department said.

Hyderabad’s water supply scheme to be expanded

Hyderabad’s Godavari drinking water project accounts for the largest share of the latest approvals. The estimated cost is Rs 1,992 crore.

Under the second and third phases, nearly 120 km of pipelines will be laid to carry water from Ghanpur to the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs. Two treatment plants, with capacities of 120 MLD and 70 MLD, will also be built.

Once these phases are completed along with the first phase, the scheme is expected to add 20 tmc of water to Hyderabad’s supply. It is designed to serve around 1.74 crore people until 2035.

Warangal gets major drainage project

Greater Warangal will receive Rs 1,465 crore for a city-wide stormwater drainage upgrade aimed at addressing waterlogging and flooding.

The plan covers 407.70 square kilometres and targets 24 locations identified as vulnerable to flooding. It includes building additional drainage channels and restoring 10 major water bodies.

Another Rs 209 crore has been approved to improve the moat surrounding Warangal Fort, a historic Kakatiya-era site. The work will involve desilting, landscaping, promenades, viewing platforms and bridges. Officials have already cleared around 400 metres of the moat as part of the initial work.

Hanumakonda and Alampur projects

The Hanumakonda Central Business District will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 168.8 crore. The project includes a bus terminal combined with a commercial complex, multi-level parking, improvements to the central plaza and better infrastructure near the Bhadrakali and Thousand Pillar temples.

Alampur has been allocated Rs 57.5 crore for an integrated heritage, tourism and urban renewal project. Facilities around the Jogulamba and Navabrahma temples will be improved through better roads and parking. The plan also includes a crafts village, sponge park, renovation of the Pushkara ghat and a 300-metre pedestrian heritage route.
