Bengaluru: Karnataka police have arrested a 39-year-old man for allegedly cheating a Telangana resident of Rs 10 lakh by handing over counterfeit gold bars weighing 250 grams.

The accused has been identified as D Raju, while the victim is Bodige Srinivas of Telangana. According to the police, the incident took place on September 26 near Koradihalli village in Challakere taluk in Chitradurga district.

Raju allegedly asked Srinivas to meet him on the road leading to the Chinnahagari stream near the village. He reportedly offered 250-gram gold bars, claiming that they were genuine. Believing the claim, Srinivas handed over Rs 10 lakh and a mobile phone to the accused. He later realised that the gold bars were fake and had been cheated.

Srinivas subsequently lodged a complaint at the Nayakanahatti police station. Acting on the complaint, police launched an investigation and traced Raju.

The police seized Rs 4.5 lakh in cash and a mobile phone from the accused. Further investigation is underway to establish whether he was involved in similar cheating cases or had accomplices.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Kushal Choukse cautioned the public against fraudsters attempting to sell counterfeit gold by passing it off as genuine. He urged people not to fall for suspicious offers and to inform the nearest police station if they come across such activities.
