An extra seamer could have made a difference, says Taskin Ahmed

The second Test between Bangladesh and West Indies at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium ran from November 5 to 9, 2026. After losing the toss, Bangladesh watched West Indies recover from 27 for 3 to post 235 for 4 by the close of Day 1, with bad light bringing an early finish to play.

Bangladesh's bowling attack featured three spinners in Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan and Nayeem Hasan, alongside pace bowlers Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed. The decision to include an extra spinner proved costly on the opening day. Taijul, Mehidy and Nayeem combined to send down 42 overs without taking a wicket, while Hasan Mahmud and Taskin each claimed two wickets.

The pitch had grass the day before but appeared dry on match day, prompting the team management to back the extra spinner option. All three fast bowlers were kept on standby, with the final XI confirmed only at the last moment.

Taskin reflected on the challenges of bowling in conditions that deteriorated as the day progressed. The pitch flattened considerably, leaving little room for error for both seamers and spinners. He emphasised the importance of sustained bowling discipline and patience when attacking the stumps.

"At one point it felt like another pacer would have helped. The moisture in that first hour, we were utilising it properly, the ball was moving, and there were chances of more wickets. With another fast bowler we could have bowled longer spells," Ahmed said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"The margin for bowlers, whether fast or spin, is very small. If you go slightly off you get hit. There is no magic delivery here. The only way to get wickets is to bowl to the fielders for a long time and wait for the batters to make mistakes," he added.

How did Bangladesh adjust its bowling strategy?

Bangladesh's bowling unit adjusted its approach as the match unfolded. When conventional length bowling failed to produce results, the pace bowlers mixed in short deliveries to unsettle the West Indies batsmen. This tactical shift yielded success when Hasan Mahmud claimed the wicket of Kevin Wickham using this combination.

"When nothing was happening bowling just lengths, we planned to mix the bouncer with the length to confuse the batters. And in that spell Hasan got a wicket. Whatever is working for one of us, whatever process is helping someone be consistent, we share it. There is no ego about keeping things to yourself in this bowling unit. I am sure one word from me could help a teammate and we believe that," Ahmed said.

What challenges does Bangladesh face with squad depth?

The absence of Nahid Rana underscored Bangladesh's ongoing concerns about squad depth and player workload management. Taskin acknowledged the difficult balance between rotation and maintaining a competitive bowling attack across a crowded fixture list.

"We are missing Nahid Rana. One injury led to another. If a bowler plays continuously without managing workload and picks up a serious injury, getting that rhythm back is very difficult," Ahmed said.

"Sometimes even after performing well you don't play certain matches because of rotation or workload. But the reality is that outside four or five bowlers, we just don't have others right now. And there are a lot of matches coming," he concluded.
