At Sylhet, West Indies batted through day one of the second Test against Bangladesh, reaching 235 for 4 after 70 overs before play was called off due to bad light. The visitors arrived in Bangladesh leading the series 1-0 and seeking to consolidate their position with a strong first-innings total on a pitch expected to deteriorate as the match progressed.

Kevin Wickham made an impressive 61 in his Test debut, forming a crucial 131-run fourth-wicket partnership with Amir Jangoo, who remained unbeaten on 111. Jangoo's unbeaten century was his second Test hundred, achieved in his tenth innings, and the partnership proved vital in stabilising the West Indies innings after early wicket losses.

"Well, I think it's good for us to try to get to a massive total, probably 400 plus or 350 plus because of the way the surface is playing at the moment," Wickham said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Why does West Indies need a big total?

Wickham's assessment of the pitch shaped West Indies' batting strategy. The surface showed signs of deterioration, and the batter recognised that a commanding first-innings total would provide a significant advantage.

"I think it's a wicket that you would want to bat once on or give yourself that opportunity that you could bowl twice at these guys," Wickham said.

How did Wickham prepare for his Test debut?

Wickham's call to the West Indies squad came unexpectedly. John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul were both unavailable due to viral fever, creating an opening for the debutant to step into the middle order.

"The coach actually told me to stay ready because a few guys weren't feeling well last night. So basically it was just about getting set and ready for my mind, just in case the opportunity presents itself," Wickham said.

"Honestly, it's always a dream to play Test cricket and once the opportunity presents itself, I make sure that I'm ready and fit to go and grab that opportunity," he added.

What was Wickham's experience in his first Test innings?

Wickham stated that he initially felt nervous after losing early wickets in his first Test innings but remained focused on batting for as long as possible. He praised Amir Jangoo for guiding him and explaining the importance of patience in Test cricket. He also highlighted the consistency of Test bowling and the need to trust his defence. Regarding Bangladesh, he acknowledged their effective field placements and pressure-building efforts, while noting that batting became easier after settling at the crease.

"Yeah, first Test innings and there was a bit of nerves around after losing wickets early but my aim was just to bat as long as possible. I think that Amir (Jangoo) batted very well. I think that for most of my innings he was guiding me and telling me what Test cricket is all about, just staying patient. The bowling is a lot more consistent, so just trust the defence. And I think that worked very well for me," Wickham said.

"I think that Bangladesh obviously set some really good fields. Things weren't going their way for a bit and then they just tried to contain us and tried to build a lot of pressure. So I think that the spinners did a pretty decent job, but as you get in on the pitch it becomes easier, so I wouldn't say it was an easy task, but when you put down your head and bat, it's pretty good," he added.
