Safety lapses suspected after factory collapse kills three workers

Hosur: Alleged safety lapses at an under-construction factory near SIPCOT in Hosur resulted in a major accident on Friday, November 6, leaving three workers dead and four others seriously injured.

The incident took place at the premises of Balaji Gears, where construction workers were engaged in pouring concrete into a mould. The wooden centring supports suddenly collapsed, unable to withstand the load, bringing down the structure and burying several workers beneath the debris.

The deceased were identified as Kumareshan (39), Michael (26) and Srinivasan (26). The injured were admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

Emergency rescue operations were launched immediately. Cranes were deployed to remove the collapsed material and retrieve the bodies of the trapped workers.

District Collector Dinesh and SP Anita visited the factory and reviewed the rescue operation. Preliminary inspection suggested that the structure lacked sufficient supporting pillars and the necessary arrangements to withstand the concrete load.

District Collector Dinesh Kumar said a total of 17 workers were involved in the construction activity. The collapse of the main entrance structure led to the deaths of three workers.

Taking serious note of the accident, the Collector directed the Hosur Deputy Superintendent of Police to initiate strict action against the engineer responsible for designing the structure and others involved in the construction.

The deceased were reportedly from Hosur, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai. The authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, including possible violations of construction safety norms.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the risks faced by construction workers when structural safety and precautionary measures are allegedly neglected.
