Seafarer killed in explosion on oil tanker in Gulf
One seafarer was killed when an explosion struck an oil products tanker in the Gulf on Thursday, November 5, in an incident suspected to have been caused by a missile attack, Reuters reported.
The Marshall Islands-flagged MT Velos Sapphire was sailing towards Bahrain without cargo when the explosion occurred, its Greek management company, Velos Tankers, said in a statement on Friday, November 6.
The crew member was initially reported missing following the blast before being found dead on board, the company said.
The other crew members escaped injury and extinguished a fire that broke out after the explosion. No oil spill or other pollution was reported.
The tanker was subsequently taken to Bahrain’s Khalifa Bin Salman Port. An investigation into the incident is expected to be launched, while the extent of the damage to the vessel’s hull remains under assessment.
