Riyadh: Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed a Houthi cruise missile and a drone targeting the Riyadh region on Saturday, November 7, according to the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen.

The coalition’s official spokesman, Major General Turki al-Maliki, announced the interception of the cruise missile in a statement posted on X, confirming that the projectile had been destroyed before reaching its target.

The announcement came hours after al-Maliki confirmed that another aerial threat, a drone launched by the Houthi militia, had been intercepted and destroyed in the Riyadh region. The two incidents marked separate attempts to target the Saudi capital.

The interceptions came amid continued missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia by the Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and several other parts of the country.

Tensions escalated in July after a truce brokered in 2022 between the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognised government collapsed. The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of bombing Sanaa airport to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing. They subsequently announced a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia and resumed attacks on oil tankers and energy facilities, citing restrictions on areas under their control.

In October, the head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, announced the launch of Operation Dawn of Yemen. The campaign aims to restore state institutions, retake the capital Sanaa and end Houthi control.

Yemeni Armed Forces spokesman Colonel Majid al-Nuzaili also confirmed the start of the operation, saying it would target Houthi capabilities and personnel on a large scale.

The conflict in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis launched an offensive against government forces and seized control of Sanaa. In March 2015, Saudi Arabia began leading a military coalition in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
