Telangana HC questions CBSE over costly books in private schools

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has sought to know from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) what steps it has taken to address allegations that private schools affiliated with the board were pushing students towards exorbitantly priced books rather than the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks.
Justice NV Shravan Kumar was hearing a writ petition filed by a parent from Borabanda.
The petitioner’s counsel, Vijay Gopal, also sought the court’s intervention on the implementation of mandatory institutional mechanisms like school management committees, school governing bodies and parent-teacher associations in private schools, The Times of India reported.
Referring to CBSE affiliation bylaws and the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, the petitioner’s counsel argued that CBSE-affiliated schools should be directed to teach from NCERT books.
Alleging the board’s inaction over earlier complaints, the petitioner sought a penalty of Rs 10 lakh.
The matter has been posted for further hearing on November 12.
