Beer taste set to change in Telangana as breweries turn to groundwater amid Manjeera water shortage

Sangareddy: Bad news to beer lovers in Telangana. As the HMWSSB officials have almost stopped supplying Manjeera water to beer companies located around Sangareddy town, the beer companies are forced to depend on groundwater to manufacture the beers.

Since Manjeera water adds taste to beer, major breweries in Telangana had set up their manufacturing units in and around Sangareddy town. They would draw water from the Singur project for their manufacturing purposes round the year.

Since Singur had abundant water in the last six years, the Beer manufacturers had enough water resources available and they were never dependent on groundwater until 2019. However, for the first time in six years they are going to depend on the groundwater in their manufacturing units. The beer lovers would consume 35 lakh cases to 60 lakh cases per month. The consumption peaks during festive periods and during the summer.

These industries were scouting for renting borewells in agriculture farms and residential areas that could supply them water. However, these companies would accept the water only after carrying out certain tests.

Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical companies and other companies located in Sangareddy district, which would need water in their operation, were also searching for water resources. They were primarily focusing on the agriculture pump sets of farmers who could supply water until next June.

The ground water table also started depleting due to over exploitation and poor rainfall. The average groundwater table in Sangareddy dropped to 11.24 meters in September compared to last year’s 4.71 meters.
