Serbia News: Serbia is witnessing a historic political shift as a student-backed opposition movement defeats the ruling political alliance led by Aleksandar Vucic in the parliamentary elections. Thousands of students and local residents took to the streets of the capital, Belgrade, to celebrate the victory. Slavija Square turned into a centre of celebrations, with people waving Serbian flags, setting off fireworks and chanting slogans in support of the student movement. The election marks a major setback for Vucic, whose political dominance began in 2014. After the defeat, Vucic conceded that his political camp had lost the election, paving the way for a potential change in government. The victory follows nearly two years of student-led protests against his government. The demonstrations gained momentum after a railway station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people. Protesters demanded accountability, action against corruption and greater transparency from the authorities. The student-backed electoral list emerged as a strong political force, securing approximately 52.7 per cent of the vote, compared with 39.2 per cent for the alliance led by Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party, according to preliminary results reported on October 26, 2026. The outcome has opened a new chapter in Serbian politics after more than a decade of dominance by Vucic's political camp. However, the movement now faces the challenge of forming a government and turning its promises of reform into action. The celebrations in Belgrade reflect the significance of this electoral change and the hopes of supporters for a new political direction in Serbia.
