BRS seeks extension of Telangana graduate voter registration deadline

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to extend the deadline for graduate voter registration in Telangana.
To support its claim for the extension, it cited delays in document verification and a lack of public awareness.
Current deadline
The current deadline for submitting applications is November 6.
The party has requested that it be extended to December 6 to give eligible graduates more time to register in the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad and Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Graduate MLC constituencies.
In this regard, a BRS delegation led by deputy floor leader Talasani Srinivas Yadav submitted a representation to Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Sudarshan Reddy on Monday, October 26.
According to the party, only 26,085 applications of the around 5.23 lakh Form-18 applications submitted till October 24 had been approved.

The BRS said the approved applications represented just 2.52 per cent of the 10.36 lakh graduates listed in the 2021 electoral rolls.
Eligibility for Telangana graduate voter registration
Not every voter can participate in the Graduates’ Constituency elections. A person must be a resident of the concerned constituency and have passed a degree, an equivalent diploma, or a higher qualification at least three years before November 1, 2026.
For the current elections, the degree must have been completed on or before October 31, 2023. The date of convocation is not considered. The date of passing mentioned in the marks memo or provisional certificate will be used.
Telangana has a bicameral legislature with a Legislative Assembly and a Legislative Council. The Legislative Council is a permanent body with 40 members, each serving a six-year term. One-third of its members retire every two years.
Of the 40 Legislative Council members, three are elected by graduates, three by teachers, 14 by local authorities, 14 by the Legislative Assembly, and the Governor nominates six.
Telangana has three Graduates’ Constituencies. They are Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad, Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda and Adilabad-Nizamabad-Medak-Karimnagar.
