Brian Lara urges Temba Bavuma to ‘finish the job’ ahead of Newlands decider

Temba Bavuma's unbeaten 179 anchored South Africa's dramatic fightback in the second Test against Australia at St George's Park on October 20, 2026. The innings proved to be Bavuma's career-best score and the highest by a South African captain against Australia. Bavuma shared crucial partnerships with Marco Jansen, adding 85 runs, and Simon Harmer, combining for a South African Test record 182 runs for the eighth wicket. His performance earned him man of the match honours as South Africa secured an innings and 31-run victory on October 22, levelling the series at 1-1 heading into the final match at Newlands in Cape Town.

Rather than simply celebrating the St George's Park innings, Lara framed his response as a call for the Proteas captain to maintain momentum into the series decider.

Lara's message to Bavuma focused on the quality of the innings under pressure and the importance of translating that performance into sustained success. The West Indies icon recognised the magnitude of Bavuma's contribution to South Africa's fightback while using the moment to deliver a broader lesson about championship mentality.

"I know I'm a little late in congratulating my good friend Temba Bavuma and the Proteas, but there's a reason for the delay. Temba's magnificent 179 was, in my view, one of the great Test innings of this era. To produce that kind of performance under pressure, when your team needs you most, speaks volumes about the man and the captain," wrote Lara on Instagram.

Lara's message extended beyond celebration of the Gqeberha innings. He framed his delayed congratulations as an opportunity to emphasise the importance of maintaining momentum rather than becoming complacent after a significant achievement. The West Indies icon stressed that sporting greatness requires not just reaching a peak but sustaining the drive to remain there.

"Congratulations, Temba and South Africa. Enjoy the moment, because the next challenge awaits and that's precisely why I've waited to share my thoughts. Success deserves to be celebrated, but the moment you achieve it, your focus must also turn to sustaining that momentum. In sport, you cannot afford to become a prisoner of what you've just accomplished. You must learn from it, draw confidence from it, and prepare to do it all over again," Lara added.

The Newlands decider carries particular significance for Bavuma, who made his maiden Test hundred at the same venue in 2016 and now returns to Cape Town with the series level and everything to play for. Lara concluded his message with a reflection on the nature of sustained excellence in competitive sport, underscoring that the true test of a champion lies not in reaching the summit but in maintaining the hunger and discipline required to stay there.

"That’s the challenge of greatness: not just reaching the summit, but finding the hunger and discipline to stay there." Lara said.
