Tata Motors & Amazon To Deploy 3,000 Electric Trucks Across India

GaadiWaadi -
The Tata Ultra E.7 will enter Amazon’s freight network as the programme extends from city routes to the 2,800 km Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai corridor
The Amazon transportation network in India will deploy 3,000 electric trucks supplied by Tata Motors, starting during the festive season. The first vehicles will support intra city freight movement before the programme extends to longer routes. Importantly, Amazon describes the project as its largest electric truck deployment in India and its biggest step yet to electrify freight operations outside last-mile delivery.
The planned highway element is particularly ambitious. The companies intend to electrify the 2,800 km Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai route along NH48 – crossing seven states and linking six large e-commerce regions. Dedicated charging hubs will support truck operations on the corridor, and Yahhvi is involved in the infrastructure work. Amazon already has 10 charging yards across India developed by the same provider.
The commercial structure also differs from a direct fleet purchase by Amazon. Tata Motors will supply the trucks for Amazon’s transportation requirements, but carrier partners in the logistics network will own and operate them. Crucially, Tata will also provide servicing, charging infrastructure and operational support – putting the project well past the scope of a limited vehicle trial.

The Tata Ultra E.7 sits at the centre of the initial deployment. The electric truck has an integrated e-axle, CCS2 fast charging and regenerative braking. The cabin has undergone crash testing and incorporates high voltage safety systems. Tata says the vehicle is designed for lower operating costs and higher uptime, two factors that matter heavily when electric trucks move from pilot fleets into regular freight work.
The Delhi introduction gains another advantage from the city’s 2026 EV Policy. The first 1,000 privately owned medium duty electric trucks registered during the first three months after the policy takes effect will receive unrestricted entry into Delhi for 10 years. Ordinarily, freight vehicles face “No Entry” restrictions during specified periods and thus, eligible electric trucks could operate across a much larger daily time window.

The plan builds on an existing electric fleet inside Amazon’s Indian logistics network. The company says more than 15,000 electric vehicles already operate across over 500 cities. Separately, the Laneshift programme with C40 Cities tested electric trucks on the Bengaluru-Chennai corridor and contributed to an evidence based roadmap for zero-emission trucking. More recently, Superev was introduced as a digital platform encompassing charging access, vehicles, financing and renewable energy.
The massive truck deployment also sits within Amazon’s stated target of net zero carbon emissions by 2040. National initiatives such as PM E-Drive and Parivartan are supporting electric commercial vehicle adoption as well. Ultimately, this project will provide a large operational test of electric trucking across different conditions from high volume city freight routes to one of India’s longest inter state logistics corridors.
