Rising temperatures trigger snake sightings in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Residents across Bengaluru are reporting more frequent snake sightings as the weather turns hotter following recent rains. Snakes are being found near shoe stands, parked two-wheelers, bathrooms and washing machines, prompting people to seek help from civic and emergency services.

More than 200 calls were reportedly received over three days by the BBMP helpline, police emergency number 100 and fire and emergency services regarding snakes entering homes and residential premises.

Cobras, Russell’s vipers, water snakes and kraits have been among the reptiles spotted in different neighbourhoods. Trained rescuers have been attending to complaints and removing snakes from residential properties.

Rapid urbanisation is considered one of the factors contributing to the encounters. In localities such as Vidyaranyapura, Nagarabhavi, RR Nagar, Yelahanka, JP Nagar and Sarjapur, construction and infrastructure development have altered or reduced natural habitats, increasing the chances of snakes entering inhabited areas.

Snake experts have warned residents against trying to handle the reptiles themselves. They have also expressed concern over people attempting risky snake-catching stunts to create social media reels, stressing that such behaviour could endanger both the individual and others nearby.

The concern extends beyond Bengaluru, with Karnataka recording 702 snakebite cases and six deaths in the past week alone. Since January, 17,608 people have reportedly suffered snakebites across the state, and 205 have died.

In response, the Health Department has instructed district hospitals and primary health centres to keep anti-snake venom available and provide immediate treatment to snakebite victims. Health Minister UT Khader has also called for timely access to medicines and medical care.

Authorities and experts have advised the public to maintain a safe distance if a snake is spotted, avoid attempting to kill or capture it, and contact trained rescuers. In the event of a snakebite, the victim should be taken to a hospital immediately for appropriate treatment.
