Excise constable chases thief, recovers stolen gold, mobiles
Hyderabad: An excise constable displayed courage and presence of mind by chasing a suspected thief for nearly half a kilometre and catching him near Kandi, recovering a bag containing gold ornaments, cash and stolen mobile phones.
The incident occurred when the constable, D Malkayya, was travelling by bus from Sangareddy to Nampally Excise Station in Hyderabad to attend to his duties. A bus conductor grew suspicious of a passenger who had allegedly stolen a bag and mobile phones on the bus and alerted other passengers before the suspect got down at Kandi stage.
Acting on the conductor’s alert, Malkayya got off the bus and attempted to apprehend the suspect. However, the man tried to escape, prompting the constable to chase him for about half a kilometre before catching him.
The suspect was identified as B Venkateswarlu, a native of the Rajahmundry region. The constable recovered the stolen bag and mobile phones from him. The bag was found to contain gold ornaments and cash.
Malkayya, along with the bus conductor and driver, brought the suspect and the recovered property back on the same bus and handed them over to the Patancheru police for further action.
Passengers travelling on the bus appreciated the constable’s courage and quick response. Hyderabad Excise Superintendent Jeevan Kiran also congratulated Malkayya for his alertness and exemplary conduct in apprehending the suspect and recovering the stolen property.
