Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 205 motorists for drunk driving during a special weekend enforcement drive conducted across the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate.

According to Cyberabad Traffic ADCP (Administration) G. Narender, the offenders included 177 two-wheeler riders, eight auto-rickshaw drivers and 20 car drivers. No heavy vehicle drivers were booked during the drive.

An analysis of the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels showed that 174 motorists had alcohol levels ranging from 36 mg/100 ml to 200 mg/100 ml, while 20 recorded levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml.

The remaining 11 motorists had BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. The police said all the offenders would be produced before the court for legal proceedings. They reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol was a serious offence and warned that motorists causing fatal accidents while driving in an inebriated condition could face charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The offence carries a maximum punishment of 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine. Meanwhile, courts disposed of 289 drunk-driving cases between October 26 and 31.

Of these, 26 motorists were sentenced to fines and imprisonment, two were ordered to pay fines and undertake social service, while 261 were imposed fines, traffic police officials said.
