New Zealand's explosive batting display at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, October 30 left India's bowling attack struggling. The hosts posted 259 runs across their 20 overs in the fourth T20I of the five-match series, with the Indian pace unit unable to contain the onslaught. Arshdeep Singh proved the exception, but most other bowlers conceded at rates exceeding 12 runs per over, prompting captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir to reconsider their XI for the contest.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had returned to India's T20I setup after a four-year absence, found himself dropped from the playing eleven. Mayank Yadav took his place in the squad. The decision to remove the 36-year-old pacer sparked criticism from former India batter Mohammad Kaif, who questioned the timing and rationale behind the move.

Bhuvneshwar had taken just one wicket across the opening three T20Is, conceding 139 runs in those matches. His comeback to international cricket came after his last T20I appearance on October 24, 2026, against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, marking the start of the series. Despite modest early returns, Kaif believed the pacer warranted continued opportunity to settle into the rhythm of the contest.

"I was surprised that Bhuvneshwar was dropped. There are at least 10-11 bowlers across both teams, and each of them has a high economy. Everyone is leaking runs. I cannot understand why he was dropped. If everyone is going for runs, you cannot pick out one person like this," Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

"He is coming back after four years. You have also won the series. It is not like a do-or-die situation that you had to make this change. I do not agree with this. He should have gotten the entire series before deciding," he added.

What was Kaif's criticism of the decision?

Kaif highlighted that nearly every bowler struggled with economy rates during the fourth T20I, indicating the challenges were not unique to Bhuvneshwar. He pointed out that dropping the pacer from the side removes experience from India's bowling unit, with Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav and Nitish Reddy still being relatively new to the T20I format. Kaif added that Bhuvneshwar's experience should have been retained despite the challenging conditions and high-scoring match.

"When you are aware of his capabilities, you should have stood by him even if two or three games were bad. There is no Bumrah, and all are new bowlers. I understand we are disappointed, and he was not in the flow that we expected. I am sure Bhuvneshwar realises this himself. But he was not the only one getting hit. You would get a clear picture after giving him all five games. This is a hasty call," Kaif said.

Bhuvneshwar had enjoyed a strong domestic season before the series, finishing as the leading wicket-taker for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026 with 28 wickets in 16 matches. His performance in the league suggested he retained the quality to contribute at the international level, even if his early T20I outings against New Zealand had not yielded the expected results.
