The India head coach Gautam Gambhir outlined his approach to selection decisions and player management. Gambhir clarified that his role requires making decisions based on merit and long-term team development, rather than responding to external pressure or public sentiment.

Gambhir noted that players with a proven track record of performance deserve extended opportunities to demonstrate their value to the team.

"First of all my job is not to make everyone happy. My job is to take the right decisions, not the popular decisions. And that is what I'm there for. I think sometimes in today's day and age with so much of social media and all that chatter, what happens on the outside. No, it is very easy to take the popular decision," Gambhir said via SonyLIV.

"But for me, I think the important thing is to take the right decision and make sure that there is a lot of security inside the dressing room. Because as you just mentioned that there's a lot of talent. But again, I think guys have done phenomenally well over a longer period of time. Obviously deserves a longer rope. And that is exactly how we approach the series," the head coach added.

Gambhir praises team for quick turnaround from home to New Zealand

Notably, The Men in Blue moved directly from their West Indies series, which concluded on October 16, to New Zealand for the multi-format tour, which got underway on October 22. The transition left the squad with just one practice session before the T20I series began. Many Indian players were experiencing New Zealand conditions for the first time, yet the team adapted quickly across the opening four matches and established a 3-1 lead in the five-match series through three successful chases.

Gambhir reflected on the squad's rapid adjustment to unfamiliar conditions and the challenges of such a compressed schedule.

"Obviously it's been a very short turnaround as well. We finished off against West Indies on the 17th, flew on the 18th. We had one practice session. Got to give it to the boys, the way they adapted to the conditions. A lot of boys are coming here for the first time. And we all know that how dangerous New Zealand is in their own backyard. So again, guys adapted really well in the last four T20s," Gambhir expressed.

How does Gambhir view dead-rubber matches?

Gambhir stressed that no international match should be treated as inconsequential, regardless of series position. He emphasised the importance of maintaining intensity and treating every opportunity as a chance to improve and evolve, even when a team holds a commanding advantage.

"When you're playing for your country, there is no complacency. You got to, it's an international game. Everyone knows that how very few privileged people get the opportunity to represent the country. For me, every game is an opportunity to do something different, to learn something, to evolve. And that is exactly how we approach the game. I think there are no dead rubbers in my philosophy, in my ideology and exactly the same is in the room as well," he added.
